Ipswich boss Paul Jewell admitted his Ipswich side were lucky to come from behind and beat Leeds.

Town went behind to a Ross McCormack goal but hit back with strikes from Keith Andrews and Jason Scotland after Leeds had defender Aidy White sent off.

After shipping five and seven goals in their previous two npower Championship games the Ipswich boss was relieved to get a win, however undeserved.

“Let us be honest, Leeds are a good team and outplayed us first half,” said Jewell.

“After losing seven the players are edgy and we were on the back foot, which was understandable.

“We got a couple of decisions that went our way and a deflected goal.

“Thank Christ for that, sometimes you have to just take the victory. We needed a victory and however we got it – we will take it.”

Leeds-born David Stockdale thwarted McCormack twice in the opening 20 minutes, first saving with his feet and then a block from a point-blank header.

But McCormack was not to be denied in the 34th minute when he found space in the six-yard box and steered his header from a Robert Snodgrass cross past the keeper.

Keith Andrews has completed his move from Blackburn Rovers to Ipswich Town.

The Republic of Ireland international midfielder has joined on loan until January as he seeks regular first-team football.

He told BBC Radio Suffolk: “I didn’t want to be in an out of the team this year and I need to be playing football so I can feature for my country.

“I don’t see this as a step down at all. I see myself coming here and hopefully making a good impression.”

Andrews said he was unlikely to return to Blackburn, who he joined from MK Dons in 2008, after a difficult relationship with some of the club’s fans.

“I’ve always conducted myself very well so it’s refreshing to come to a football club where you’re appreciated,” he said.

“I’ve gone in there from League Two so it’s a massive jump and I’ve conducted myself right from the second I walked in to the club until the second I left.”

Ipswich manager Paul Jewell was disappointed with the efforts of his team after he watched them exit the Carling Cup.

Despite taking the lead and making wholesale changes, the Tractor Boys went down 2-1 to Northampton Town at Portman Road.

“We’re obviously disappointed to be out of the competition and some players let themselves down tonight,” Jewell told Ipswich’s official website.

“We played some decent football but their keeper only had one save to make at the end of the day.

“We can take something from the game,” Jewell added after the first-round defeat.

“Jack Ainsley was terrific in the middle of the defence, which is not his accustomed position, and Jay showed flashes of brilliance.

“But the result showed we are still a million miles from where we want to be.”

“You need three senior keepers for the Premier League and we’ve got that now.

“Brian has had a super couple of weeks with us and was instrumental in us winning the Cup [Trofeo Bortolotti pre-season tournament] in Italy.

“He is a very capable understudy to Paddy, so him and Radek will offer great competition for the coming season.

“It was great to be able to have a good look at him before he signed.

“He fitted in so well with the rest of the squad during pre-season, and I could tell within two days that he was the one for us.

“His attitude is first class and he’s got great mobility. He’s got everything that we need.”

Murphy made nine appearances for Ipswich last season.

After twenty months with the Suffolk team, boss Roy Keane has parted ways with Ipswich Town. Visibly disappointed with the decision, the Irishman said that he was sad to be leaving a team and place he began to call home.

In 2009, the former Manchester United player was brought in barely two days after his predecessor Jim Magilton was sacked for failing to secure a place in the play-offs in the 2008-2009 season. Keane at that time steered Sunderland to the Premier League and was brought in to clearly work wonders with the Tractor Boys as well.

His first year didn’t get off to a spectacular start, but the present season started delightfully only to fragment into disappointing losses including a 4-1 defeat at the hand of arch rival Norwich City.

Despite the poor form in the Championships however, Ipswich Town are in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup and play Arsenal for a spot in the finals. They also take on holders Chelsea on Sunday in the 3rd round FA Cup showing that perhaps Keane did know the team well and it was only a matter of time before they gelled fully.

In his statement of his departure from Ipswich, Keane said “I’m hugely disappointed to be leaving Portman Road. Results haven’t been as good as I’d have hoped so far this season and when results aren’t good the manager gets the sack, that’s the game.

“However, I have a genuine belief that we were making progress and that the players have what it takes to turn this season around.

We were preparing well for our visit to Chelsea on Sunday and then our Carling Cup semi with Arsenal. Getting to that semi proves what I know the team is capable of.”

Town will now have a mountain to climb seeing as when they had one of the greatest at the helm they still lingered in 19th position.

Meanwhile, Charlie McParland will take charge of the team, primarily for their visit to Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Charlie has been with Notts County even working with Sven Goran Eriksson briefly.

“Having reviewed the situation, Charlie has got management experience and he can draw on that experience at this time,” Town chief executive Simon Clegg told the Club website.

Irnonically, Paul Jewell is the favourite to step into Keane’s shoes at Portman Road. Jewell resigned as manager of Derby in 2008 after a 1-0 defeat by Ipswich. He has not been with a team since then. Although a decision has not been made, Simon Clegg has said as much as they will try to speed things up, a replacement in not likely to be announcent for atleast a week.

For the positive spirit and a work ethic that will surely benefit Ipswich Town…thank you Keane.

Town return to Portman Road with six consecutive losses including their 1-0 loss at Preston last week. But despite this unexplained slump, Roy Keane and his men remain positive that they will soon get back to their winning ways. Sooner better than later but we won’t be picky…as long as the wins come quick again.

Keane has said that this has been his worst run in his career, both as a manager and player but remains focussed on the game against Leicester City. He has expressed concern about the team’s poor form and also of his time at Town saying that it is all up to the owner, Marcus Evans, to decide what happens if Town were unable to take home three points tomorrow.

“I think I’ve been luckier than others in terms of my own career. But we want to win the game on Saturday and what happens Saturday night, who knows?

“Let’s go out and do our best and what will be, will be. If we’re not good enough on Saturday, then the owner might make a decision, but that’s up to the owner. I’ve just got to go out and do my best,” says the Irishman.

For the game on Saturday, Town will hopefully see some of the injured back on the team. Connor Wickham could potentially start from the bench following his recovery from a thigh injury. Luke Hyam too is recovering while Damien Delaney and Andros Townsend, both of whom were down with virus, look set to play against the Foxes as well.

Brian Murphy will continue is goal as Márton Fülöp is still recovering. He is showing signs of a quick recovery and may even be back in a week.

Mark Kennedy will continue on the left with Gianni Zuiverloon at right-back. Keane will have to wait until the last minute to decide on the inclusion of the recovering Damien Delaney who hasn’t played since he got sent off against Norwich. If Delaney is fit to play, he will partner either Tommy Smith or even Troy Brown in the centre. Darren O’Dea will also be in contention for a role in the heart of defence.

In the mid-field, Keane will surely want to be more attacking and thus central mid-field Leadbitter-Norris partnership will be given support on the flanks by Carlos Edwards on the the right and Andros Townsend on the left instead of Jack Colback. All of it however, depends on Townsend’s recovery from his brief viral spell.

Upfront, boss Keane looks to Jason Scotland and Rory Fallon to score goals following their impressive albeit goalless performance against Preston. Ronan Murray has made an impact in training and will be on Keane’s mind to start from the bench along with Connor Wickham. Tamás Priskin might not make this cut this time round after failing to leave a mark when he came on as a sub at the last game.

The Blues will be wary of the Foxes despite being on home ground, as Sven-Goran Eriksson has made his mark as manager at the lads from the Walker’s Stadium. They are currently in 13th place, 5 places above Town who have 24 points from 21 games.

Ipswich Town have lots to look forward to in the New Year, and getting the better of Arsenal and Chelsea are just two of them.

After setting up an FA Cup match against holders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Town now play Arsenal in the two leg semi-final with the first game being home at Portman Road.

It all ended for West Brom when Grant Leadbitter slotted home a goal from the penalty spot where fellow Tractor Boy Carlos Edwards was brought down.

This is the first time in a decade that the Blue have made it into the semi-finals.

Although the game ended 1-0, the potential for the score line to have read differently but still in favour of Town was huge.

In the other quarter-final, West Ham sent holders Manchester United out of the competition after an impressive game and an even better score of 4-0.

The Hammers face Birmingham who sent out rivals Aston Villa in the quarter final derby. Their first game will be at Upton Park before the second leg at St.Andrew’s.

Ipswich Town have again been drawn against Chelsea in the FA Cup. This time too, the Tractor Boys will travel to Stamford Bridge and battle it out with the Londoners for a place in the fourth round.

The last time the two teams met was in January 2009 for the same tournament but round four. That game saw Town bow out of the competition following a 3-1 defeat at the Bridge.

The meeting between the two clubs will be the fourth clash with Chelsea leading 3-0 for victories. Town though have a good opportunity this time round, to get the better of the currently out of form Chelsea.

The FA Cup ties take place on the 8/9 weekend of January 2011.
